Portuguese footwear sales to external markets have grown 8.9 % in the first quarter of the year. According to the Portuguese Footwear, Components, Leather Goods Manufacturers’ Association (APICCAPS), between January and March the country has exported 24 million pairs of shoes, worth 535 million euros.
These numbers predict a very positive result this year: “2017 may be the eighth consecutive year of growth of Portuguese footwear sales to international markets.” Since 2009 the export rate as raised 59% breaking the record in 2016 when a value of 1.9 billion euros was reached.
Analysing by markets, in the first quarter the increase in exports reached 8% in Europe, with France (9.5%), Germany (14.1%) and Netherlands (4.7%) standing out. Outside European markets, the growth rate reached 14.9%, with the USA (+6.2%), Russia (+23%) and Angola (+124%) standing highest on the ranking.
The APICCAPS reveals also that, currently, the Portuguese shoe industry exports 95% of its production to 152 countries.
